Project (http://www.mirtesen.org.ru/pages/spbcamps_2004_e.php ). St.-Petersburg is one of the Russia's major industrial and cultural centers with the population of almost 5 million people (http://eng.gov.spb.ru/culture). It was founded by Tsar Peter the Great and yet for more than 300 years remains one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It is the cradle of Russian culture, "Northern Venice", the city of white nights, which unique spirit attracts people from all over the world. Over the course of several centuries from St. Petersburg's foundation in 1703, magnificent palace and park complexes were constructed close to the Russian capital: Peterhof (Petrodvorets), Tsarskoye Selo (Pushkin), Pavlovsk, and a number of other country residences for Emperors, Grand Princes and grandees. They reflect all stages in the development of Russian architecture and landscaping from the 18th to 20th centuries. Old Ladoga is a small town in Leningrad region www.oldladoga.ru. Old Ladoga is located about 170 km from the St-Petersburg. For twelve centuries stands Ladoga on the steep bank of Volhov river. The genesis and development of this city is connected to the Russian statehood. The Normanns and the Slaves, Ugro-Finnish tribes, the merchants from West and East, all nations lived in this land, visited it moving along the great trade routes, the most famous of which is a route “from the Varangians into the Greeks”. The historical-architectural conservation area is situated on its territory now. The fortress was rebuilt several times on the basis of the ancient fortifications. Two churches of pre-Mongol period preserved: the pearl of Ladoga, St. George church and the church of the Assumption of holy Mother on the territory of Assumption convent. The ancient capital used to be a fortification post that protected Russian lands from the Northwest and the citadel of Orthodoxy. Many convents and churches are built, a part of them unfortunately was lost, however everything available to see today fascinates and generates a desire to come back here. During the past few years the ancient village has been restored. The monuments are reconstructed, the orthodox shrines are given back to the church. At any times people who are interested in history and cultural heritage are coming to Old Ladoga. Today Ladoga is turning into the tourist center, the infrastructure of the tourist industry is developing. However the charm of this place is in the beauty of nature and in the fascination of land where every piece remembers the events of the past centuries and keeps mysteries so much longed by the archeologists. The Yusupov Gardens - the gardens of the Yusupov Palace on the River Fontanka (not to be confused with the other Yusupov Palace on the River Moika) - opened to the general public in 1863, quickly becoming a popular place for both summer and winter entertainment. Interestingly, the character of the visitors varied considerably depending upon the time of year. In the winter, this was the 'silver paradise' sung by Vladimir Nabokov, a fashionable place to walk, skate, and sled. Russia's first and best skating rink, surrounded by elegant wooden galleries and lit by the glamorous magic of electricity, opened on the pond here in 1865. In 1897 and 1903 the rink hosted the European figure-skating championships. This was also the venue for high-society balls on ice. In the summer, when fashionable society upped and left for their dachas, the gardens were taken over by a different crowd - poor people, peasants, and workers from the streets round about. Entertainments included Russia's first shooting range and hot-air balloons. Today the gardens are scruffy and unkempt, but still a refreshing oasis amidst the dusty stone labyrinth of the Haymarket area. Pavlovsk (http://www.alexanderpalace.org/pavlovsk) was built for Russian Tsar Paul I, only son of Catherine the Great. The palace is located southeast of the city of St. Petersburg, a few miles beyond the town of Tsarskoe Selo. The original estate was around 1500 acres and was a gift from Catherine to Paul on the birth of his first son, the future Tsar Alexander I, in 1777. Work on the palace began in 1781 under the direction of the famous Scottish architect, Charles Cameron. Being one of Catherine's favorite architects did not enamour him with Paul and his wife Maria. Paul detested his mother and had a habitual aversion to her favorites. After Cameron's departure, many other architects worked at Pavlovsk, including Voronikhin, Brenna, Rossi and others.Pavlovsk has a dual look and feel, which reflects the different outlook and tastes of its oweners, Paul and Maria. Pauls hand can be seen in prominent militaristic motifs throughout many of the state rooms, while elsewhere one can see the exquisite and refined tastes of his wife at work. After the murder of Paul in 1801, Pavlovsk became the primary residence of his widow. After her death in 1828 the palace passed to their son, Grand Duke Mikhail Petrovich. Mikhail was childless and bequeathed Pavlovsk to his nephew Konstantin Nickolaevich, who left in turn to his son, the famous poet Konstanin Konstantinovich. During this period the main building of the palace was recognised by the Romanov family as a unique artistic and historic legacy and was preserved as a virtual museum. Very few changes were made to the decoration and it continued to have the look and feel of the early 19th century. After the revolution the palace passed through difficult times involving many threats to its very survival. During WWII the palace was badly damaged and looted. It was restored after the war and is now open as a museum. For the best history of the building look for "Pavlovsk, Life of a Russian Palace" by Suzanne Massie. International Workcamps in Russia 2005 Novgorod Volunteer Service Workcamp Summer Programme 2005
We are happy to present our 2005 workcamp program! This year we can offer 16 interesting international workcamps to your volunteers. We are waiting for your motivated volunteers and wish a great season to all of you! Yours, NNVS-Team
The Organization The regional public organization “Nizhniy Novgorod Volunteer Service” was established in 1997. The mission mostly concerns the promotion of ideas of volunteering and charity in Russian society and also to help underprivileged groups of people through youth initiatives. The directions of our activities are wide – we are acting as a volunteer agency, organizing charity programs and fundraising events, realize training programs for representatives of business, local governmental institutions and NGOs, international workcamps etc. In the sphere of international workcamps NNVS has been working since 1999. Visa and invitation process!!! There are lot of legends coming around visa process in Russian embassies, Russian institutions where the invitations are made by years and Russian bureaucracy in general. We believe that legends made by humans and we believe that by positive cooperation with your organization we can make other legends. It is true that the invitation for Russian workcamps is a long process compared to European organizations. We depend on institutions like the Ministry of Internal Affairs where we have to apply for official invitation for volunteers. What time does it usually take for invitation process? The invitation takes 9-14 days after we receive all the documents from our partner. What do we need? Data which we need for invitation process: Name of volunteer Present address Telephone Date of birth Citizenship Passport Number Date of issue Date of expiry Occupation Working place (study)/address: Dates of staying in Russia Place/city where volunteer plans to get visa Cities which volunteer plans to visit
After we receive the invitation we will send it by fax to you and if the original is needed by post. In some Russian embassy it’s enough to have fax invitation, but in some of them they ask for original, for example at the Russian embassies in Brussels, The Haag, Stockholm etc. It means that it will take more or less 2 weeks till the invitation finally arrives at your office. The volunteer needs to check earlier in the embassy if he/she needs original invitation or if fax invitation is enough. Invitations will be made on 1, 2 or 3 months period. So please, remember that invitation process will take 2-4 weeks (4 if the volunteer needs the original invitation). Plus visa process in Russian embassy. Special requirements: Environmental workcamp in National Reserve “Russian North” –an encephalitis vaccination is recommended – do it beforehand.
Age limits: There is no up age limit, usually we expect that volunteer is over 18 years old (there can be exceptions). Our workcamps: Art – different art projects, volunteers should use their creativity. Cult – Cultural-ethnic workcamps, volunteers will be able to get acquainted with Russian traditional life style. Disabled – workcamp for disabled kids with the help of specialists. Envi – environmental issues in Russian national parks and reservations. Cons – renovating or reconstruction issues. EVS NNVS invites our partners to cooperate in the frame of EVS projects. There is an interest to host and send motivated volunteers for half and one year volunteer projects. Please inform us if it’s interesting for you to prepare joint projects till the next deadlines. Possible EVS projects in Russia: 1. Art and culture Socio-cultural projects in children libraries (N.Novgorod and Saint Petersburg), in the puppet theatre (N.Novgorod), in a folk art theatre (Ivanovo), Centre of French culture – Alliance Francais (N. Novgorod). The libraries in N. Novgorod and St. Petersburg are public children libraries. Mostly libraries are used to get some information for studies and only 10 % of teenagers read it for pleasure. In libraries volunteers are invited to help with promotion of book reading, it means with PR. To help with organizing public events, presentations, make press-releases, some small events like culture weeks – for example a week of culture, literature, art of the volunteer’s country. Another task is to create a volunteer centre on the base of libraries, to involve teenagers in volunteer activities of the library. It doesn't mean to create volunteer centre as an organization, but to create a group of teenagers which on the bases of the library will make some small or maybe big volunteer projects. Another possibility if the volunteer speaks English and other languages quiet well, she/he can make some courses of it in for example, in German, French or other languages. It could be lessons for children (7-13 years old).
Puppet Theatre (Nizhniy Novgorod) – This is a really big institution with more then 25 actors and more then 20 plays in a month. The volunteer is invited to help with decorations for the scene (to repair them and create new ones), design of stands, help with new plays, create teenager club, which will learn how to make puppets and to put up a play. It will help to motivate teenagers and young people and could cause a revival of their interest in puppet theatres and art in general.
Folk art theatre (Ivanovo) – to organize design and art workshops. Centre of French culture – Alliance Francais (Nizhniy Novgorod). The volunteer is invited to support the organization of events such as French Film Festival, theatre festival among schools and other events. Besides, to help in the library department of the centre. Youth Esperanto-Association in Cheboksary (Chuvash Republic). A volunteer is invited to work in the office of the organization as a project-manager. The volunteer takes part in the organization of intercultural events (International Language Festival, international evenings at schools and universities, language course of his/her native language, organization of intercultural summer camp, trainings in the offices of other Esperanto organizations of Russia. The volunteer will help in accepting people for volunteer programs (providing information, filling documents etc). Cultural-linguistic centre “Sodruzhestvo” in Cheboksary (Chuvash Republic). A volunteer is invited to coordinate linguistic and cultural classes for children and young people. He or she could also help in organization of Linguistic festival and coordinate linguistic workcamps for pupils and students.
2. Development of youth volunteer centers (and their programs) in Russia - (local centers in N.Novgorod Region, volunteer center for disabled children in Cherepovets (Vologda region), centers in Samara and Saransk). Volunteer Services in Saransk and Samara. Volunteer Services have quiet a lot of developed activities, but they still need support in program work. Tasks of the volunteer could be to coordinate local volunteers, initiate volunteer projects, help in their realization and organize volunteer clubs (monthly meetings).
Rehabilitation centre for disabled children in Cherepovez – The center has developed programs of support and rehabilitation of children. The volunteer is asked to create a volunteer centre (as program). The organization has motivated teenagers and young people, but they don't know from what to start. With support of NNVS – the volunteer could make presentations of the centre and recruit future volunteers and organize some volunteer projects and events.
3. Work with disabled children - Projects in centers for physically disabled, mentally disabled children in N.Novgorod
"Veras" - centre for disabled children (Nizhniy Novgorod). It's a daily centre for disabled kids which stay at home and are not able to go to school. There are 4 pedagogues, 3 specialists and one EVS volunteer working. The volunteer will help with daily tasks - help the kids to eat, bring them to different classes, play out-side and inside, make some art-therapy. Volunteer will have possibility to create a own rehabilitation and development program for children – for example to learn to draw, write, make some art etc. There is also some work with parents - help to organize the seminar for them, have some join meetings etc. The centre has a close relation with German and Swedish organizations - so it could be interesting for volunteer to participate in the seminar by specialists from there and to help in the organization of it.
"Preodoleniye" - Centre for disabled children, teenagers and youngsters (Nizhniy Novgorod). Volunteers already for 4 years organizing a workshop called "Ulibka" (smile) for mental and physically disabled teenagers and young people. It's an art, music, workshop (depends on ability, skills and interests of volunteer). Also the volunteer organizes different parties, visits to theatres and excursions.
Art-educational project for blind kids – The volunteer is invited to prepare some hand-made books for blind kids through which they learn how the sun or the sea feels like by touch and to realize art-therapy for them.
4. Work with orphans - educational, developmental projects in orphanages (N.Novgorod)
The volunteer will teach orphans English, will help them to make homework and organize some leisure activities for them. If the volunteer is able to hold a music or art workshop or a theatre class, this would be great. Other tasks are to visit with the children different places of interests - cinema, theatres, museums. For the small kids the volunteer could create development games (using different methods of Russian pedagogues). Maybe the volunteer could do some fundraising if it's needed in the orphanage.
5. Ecological projects - involving youth to work in youth ecological centers (N.Novgorod) In Nizhniy Novgorod we have quiet strong organisations which work in the sphere of ecological education for pupils - ecological classes, events etc. A volunteer would be a great support in the work with pupils and students - to get involved them to the events, coordinate and organize workcamps etc.
NNVS has also big data base of volunteers which are eager to make half or one year service abroad.
